Leaving a Legacy

We all want to make a positive contribution to the world. To make a lasting difference not just to our own families, but also to a cause or institution that is important to us. Perhaps it is a school, a hospital or a particular area of medical research or social challenge.

At Jarislowsky Fraser, we believe the desire to "give back" is essential to our society and should be nurtured. This is why we established the Jarislowsky Fraser Donor Advised Foundation. "Giving back" is easier than ever.  By gifting through the Foundation, you do not have to incur the expenses and administrative burden of establishing your own foundation, while knowing you are making the world a better place.

Another advantage is that you gain immediate tax benefits. You are issued a receipt for the full amount of your contribution, which can offset income tax. Should you choose to donate securities, your donation can also reduce capital gains tax on shares with large unrealized capital gains.

About the Foundation

The Jarislowsky Fraser Donor Advised Foundation’s mission is to assist in providing long term revenue for Canadian charities. This registered public foundation is a vehicle which allows you to donate cash or securities, receive an immediate tax receipt for the full amount of the donation and recommend which charities will receive the future income stream from your contributed capital.

Potential benefits of a donation to the Jarislowsky Fraser Donor Advised Foundation:

  • As of the May 2006 Federal Budget you will not pay capital gains tax on any securities donated to the Foundation. This is especially attractive for those shares you hold that have a very low cost base and a high current market value.
  • You can maintain long term name recognition (e.g. your family name) for donations to qualified Canadian charities.
  • This foundation has one of the lowest costs in the industry and therefore represents a cost effective alternative to establishing and running your own foundation.
  • Good for individuals who want to receive the full tax benefit of charitable gifting immediately while maintaining the ability to recommend where the future yearly income payments are donated.
  • May reduce future estate taxes.
  • You can gift the control of the income payments to a successor at death.
